Zachary the Vampire

Zach performed in his class opera on Thursday (Nov. 20th). It was written by the class and so funny! The ghosts, werewolves, bats, witches and vampires are trying to combine their efforts to have a scary party. The highlight of the evening (for me anyway) was when Zach noticed that the little girl next to him was "hiding" (because Zach is so tall). He very tenderly placed his hand on her back and encouraged her in front of him so that her Mommy could see her too. He did it again at the end of the play when a little boy that is disabled was stuck behind the line of kids and is not bold enough to push his way through. Zachy looked around, noticed this little guy and very sweetly helped him up to the front. It was so cute, I love this boy!! He does these things without even thinking about it, it is just his innate personality. Zach has the sweetest, most tender heart!

Miss T

Tia is teasing Andrew when he is trying to kiss her cheek... so cute! Mother's Day 2008 What a sweet face!!!
Tia was eating carrots. When she eats anything it's a big deal, we get the camera. "Eskimo Kisses"
~Tia says Hi!~
I get a lot of inquiries from people about our little "Miss T". Tia was born at 24 weeks weighing 1 lb. 4 oz. She was in the NICU for 8 months to stabilize her before they could send her home. She did go home with her birth parents but was removed from them by the police and child protective services when they stopped taking her to her medical appointments and wouldn't let DCFS in to check on her. When the did get into the home (forcibly) they found that her birth parents were not giving her medication or feeding her properly. She was removed from the home and placed in the hospital for dehydration and failure to thrive. Tia was placed in a specialized medical foster home where she lived until we adopted her 2 years ago. At the time of her removal, her birth mom was already pregnant with Krista (Krista was born at 31 weeks, declared in "imminent danger" and placed in the same foster home as Tia when she was discharged from the hospital at 2 months old). Due to her extreme prematurity, both of Tia's retina's detached so she is completely blind. She also had a severe brain hemorrhage and has been diagnosed as "profoundly mentally retarded (meaning her IQ is less than 40, the jury is still out on that as far as we are concerned). Tia does not eat orally at all, we feed her with a tube that is inserted into her stomach, she "eats" Pediasure. Tia also has Cerebral Palsy so right now, does not walk independently. She will walk if we hold her hands but she makes us do all of the work :). The CP also affects the muscles in her face/mouth which is what makes eating rough. She doesn't have a whole lot of control over her mouth so the slobber flows freely :) The greatest thing about Tia is.... everything!!! She is the sweetest spirit ever born, she has a giggle that is so contagious that we have neighbor kids come over just to try to make Tia laugh so they can hear it. She knows each one of our voices, and can tell who is coming just by the way we walk into the room. "T" loves to listen to music and can be found frequently wearing her winter hat that holds the head phones for her MP3 player in place. We feel so honored to have been chosen to be the family for this angel girl, words cannot begin to express how much we adore her.

Tia the Turkey

Hailey and I went to Tia's Thanksgiving program at school yesterday. I dressed Tia in the famous turkey dress that my sister in law passed down to us. It was perfect because Tia played the part of the turkey! Her teacher read a story and whenever she said the word "turkey" Tia's aide held a communication switch for Tia to push that said "Gobble, Gobble, Gobble". It was so cute! Tia laughed every time she got to gobble. After the program we had a "dinner"; turkey, stuffing and everything. You gotta love a school program that includes a full thanksgiving feast at 11:30 on a Wed. :0)
We spent a couple of hours hanging out in Tia's classroom afterward. There are some very disabled kids in her class that are medically fragile. Hailey was so cute, she stood next to one little girl and talked to her and rubbed her leg, it was so sweet! You would think that a 2 year old would either be scared of the medical equipment or pull on the ventilator tube or something. Hailey spent quite a while with this little girl and got great pleasure in the fact that she would smile when Hailey talked to her, absolutely priceless. I was so engrossed in watching the interaction that I didn't think to take a picture. I did get pictures of Tia the Turkey! It was a very fun day.

"Krista Bean"

What to say about Miss Bean... Let me start by saying that Krista's disabilities are fairly similar to Tia's, the difference is that Krista is able to walk and talk. Her "developmental age" is apprx. 24 mo. old. Her neuro. testing, so far, has indicated that it is doubtful that Krista will ever live on her own, We are hoping that she will reach a developmental age/maturity of 13-15 years old. Krista will always live in a group home or structured setting. As things look now, we won't be able to keep Krista in our home because children with this type of deficit don't function well in a "family setting" (because of the constant emotions and changes). However, they thrive in structured settings that are more "institutional". People comment (almost daily)... "really? but she is so cute!" or "are you sure? I haven't ever seen anything "wrong" with her." Please trust us when we say that we did NOT make this up. We have spent hours praying, crying, begging and bargaining, nothing will change the fact that she is disabled, and we have to do what is best for Krista. It won't necessarily be what we (or others) think should happen. Krista doesn't have the capability to bond and form attachments. Not because she chooses not too, because she can't. It may be more helpful to hear "I'm sorry, that must be hard for your family, how are you holding up?" We are a little unclear why people think that we are "making this up" and why they are so comfortable expressing their opposing opinion directly to us. We do have 5 other (fairly high maintenence) kids that have not gone into full-time care, this is not something that we make a habit of. (yet,..ha ha).
Here is the "short list" of Krista's issues that we face daily... Severe eating "issues", she eats blankets, clothes, stuffed animals, drywall, paint, carpet and anything that she finds while compulsively scouring the floor, garbage cans or the ground outside.
She will eat until she vomits, chews and swallows the vomit then asks for more food. If we have food that she especially liked, she will make herself vomit so that she can "enjoy it again". She will drink from the sink until her abdomen is so bloated and distended that she can hardly walk, then beg, scream and cry that she wants a drink. She does not ever feel full or satisfied.
She picks at and eats her skin, chews on her arms and fingers until they are raw and bloody.
She will put her fingers in her bum until she gets enough poop out to "play with", eat, smear on walls, furniture and toys.
The friendliness, (so often pointed out to us), is exactly the same for every person Krista meets. She will climb into a strangers lap, hug and kiss them, will wander off or go with anyone. Has no comprehension that she "belongs" somewhere or with someone. Caregivers are interchangeable, Krista doesn't "bond" in the traditional sense. If we took her to a strangers house and told her she lived there, she would go and never look back.
We have dealt with her trying to push Hailey down the stairs (numerous times), encouraging Hailey to put her fingers into an exposed electrical socket and grabbing my ankle to try to trip me down the stairs. I have caught her beating Tia over the head with a toy while "singing" Tia's name. Krista cannot be left alone EVER, she has accused us of hurting or touching her bottom, punching her, slapping her, biting her, as well as reporting to Cody that "mommy hurt Tia" when he was looking at a heat rash on her back. We have to document, with written log and photos, every injury and accusation. If she gets a small injury, she will rub or scratch it until it leaves a big mark, then tell people that "mommy, daddy, teacher did it". (I have been accused of injuries that happened when I wasn't even there). Luckily, we have a whole team of psychiatric professionals that are aware of this and "on call" if Child Protective Services ever shows up.
The reason behind her behavior, which I know makes her sound a little like a sociopath:), is that Krista's brain does not recognize limits or boundaries. If a thought pops into her head she will immediately speak, yell or act,
Life with Krista is a bit "tricky", she does not recognize, remember or acknowledge consequences. She constantly seeks sensory stimulation, she cries/screams/tantrums/rages from the time she gets up until she goes to bed. The reason the behavior is not as obvious when others are around is the fact that her brain is so quickly and easily distracted that new people or surroundings keep her mind occupied by having to process new "input". When she is at home and things are familiar, she has to keep her brain "stimulated" by screaming/jumping/running/chewing, hurting herself or others, etc...
If this behavior were "purposeful" then we could use behavior modification to deal with it accordingly, but it is totally subconscious and "normal" to her. No thought goes into it at all, she does not assess a situation to see how she can manipulate it, her entire thought process is very short and impulsive. She does not remember things or "transfer learning" (if she learns something at home, she has to re-learn it at school). Everything that we know about being parents is wrong when dealing with Krista. Her behavior gets worse the more attention that she receives, positive or negative, we can't give her lots of hugs and kisses or play with her the same way that we do the other kids. The more "therapeutic" the interaction, the longer we can keep her at home. Our goal from this point is to keep her here at home as long as we possibly can. I hope that this helps clarify things... I wish it cleared things up for us :)
The positive side is... Krista is, in fact, friendly, cute, sweet, funny and her memory issues mean that everyday is a "fresh start" :)
These deficits are the direct result of choices made by Krista's birth mother, it is heart breaking to watch this child struggle daily because of someone else's choices... I guess, that's probably how Heavenly Father feels about all of us.

Halloween

OK - Truth be known... I hate Halloween! I will never understand a "holiday" in which the goal in everyone's life is to scare the snot out of people. That being said :) my kids love it (of course) and they look very cute all dressed up. (Cody Joe is the skeleton, he is with his friend Kyle)

Hailey's day in court

Hailey's adoption is finalized!!! Our hearing was scheduled for yesterday at 9:00 am, our attorney was an hour late. His clerk put the wrong name on the final decree, we then had to wait for her to bring a corrected copy. After that, the judge wouldn't sign the decree because he did not have an original copy of our criminal background clearance (we had 2 copies, but when the states work with each other to approve an out of state adoption the agency sends one for UT to keep in our file in Salt Lake and one to the file in New Jersey). The judge had the stamped paper from the bureau indicating that we had been cleared, he also had a stamp that we had FBI clearance as well (that is not required, but our social worker does it as part of her home study just to be extra thorough). It did not matter, he insisted that we bring in another original report. So... Andrew took Cody Joe to school, (luckily we sent Tia, Krista and Zach to school, small bit of inspiration that I originally felt guilty about). We stopped at the gas station to get Hailey some chips for a snack, then drove to Salt Lake and got another copy. We got back to the courthouse just before 1:00 pm, the judge was in a meeting. We gave the reports to his clerk, got Hailey some chips for lunch from the vending machine, waited another hour and a half... and FINALLY walked out of the courthouse with adoption decree!!!

Hailey Boop

The "cuteness" overfloweth...
I told Andrew that we were going to get pizza for dinner, Hailey overheard and said
"Yeah! Pee-sa Nigh-T" (she really enunciates that T on the end)
Hailey likes to "scare" Andrew... She peeks into his room and says "boo, nanoo". No special voice alteration, she says it very matter of factly.
While I was doing laundry downstairs, she squirted juice from a juice box onto the floor. When I came upstairs and stepped in it she said "I Sah-ee mom". When I went to get a washcloth, she asked me to pick her up. I told her "just a minute, I need to clean up the juice", she thought that I was upset and wouldn't pick her up. She looked up at me and said
"I Sah-ee though!"
Hailey is an absolute angel baby! We feel so lucky and blessed to have this sweet little one in our family. We signed all the papers to finalize her adoption last week (finally). We are waiting now for a court date, then we can take her to the Temple. We are very ready!

I have been "tagged"! (by Denise)

I am supposed to list 6 "quirky" things about myself... 1. I do a very good "Woody Woodpecker" impression. 2. The cans in the cupboard have to be perfectly aligned with labels all facing out exactly even. Some perspective about this "quirk", Tia gets 180 cans of Pediasure each month for her tube feedings... I won't let anyone else put the cans in the cupboard. The funniest thing about this is that I am not a neat freak at all, my house is usually pretty cluttered. 3. I love to cut out pictures from magazines and tape them into spiral notebooks. Decorating ideas, gift ideas, etc. 4. I make a list for everything, sometimes I make a list of things that I want to make lists of. 5. I love pajamas. If I could get away with it I would never get dressed into "real clothes". Truthfully, a lot of my "real clothes" look suspiciously like PJ's. 6. I laid in bed awake for 3 nights in a row thinking of things to put on this list... (see #4) I love a good list!

Elder Andrew

Andrew was ordained an Elder (by Cody) today. The High Councilman gave Andrew the best advice for a brand new Elder, he said "You have new important responsibilities, take them very seriously but don't worry yourself to death about it. Our gospel is wonderfully simple, don't complicate it". I just loved that advice, I have often thought about that as I have watched people flash their "Priesthood Authority" around. I have often pondered what we will be judged on after this life... I think that we are going to be surprised. We are so proud of Andrew and have every confidence that he will use his "new gift" well.

"Noodle"

Zachy can be somewhat...emotional. He has a flair for drama and when he has something to say he does it with his whole heart and soul. This post is dedicated to some of the funny things that Zach says. *When Dad asked him (5 or 6 times) to stop using the long shoehorn as a sword and go find something else to play with, Zach replied "FINE! I am going in the house to find something to do but I want you to know that you are NOT going to like it". *After tucking him into bed 3 times only to have him come back up to the family room again. We told him that we were turning out the lights, going upstairs to bed and he would just have to take himself back downstairs, he very dramatically replied "How can you do this to a child!" *I woke up suddenly at 5:30 am noticing that Cody was still in bed rather than at work. I poked him and said "Aren't you going to work?" I was very surprised when the response came from Zach (who had apparently climbed into our bed at some point during the night). He very calmly (and quickly) replied "I have the day off", then giggled and added "I have the day off...I don't even know what that means". He's even funny when he is asleep. *We were trying to get Saturday morning jobs done and I was having a hard time tearing Zach away from cartoons long enough to complete a task that he had forgotten. When I came in, turned off the TV, and told him to do it now! He rolled onto the floor and whined "Oh...I can't have a mom like this in my life!" *Zach brought an assignment to complete at home that was about pigs. He learned about where they live, what they eat, etc. The last question asked what he would do if he had his very own pet pig. Zach's answer... "Kill it, Cook it, Eat it" Needless to say, he provides plenty of comic relief even when he isn't trying.

Bean's first day of school

Bean started all day pre-school on Sept 2nd. She goes from 9 am to 5 pm. Bean's psychiatrist, as well as her social worker, insisted that she go all day. Children with Reactive Attachment Disorder do best if they are in a very structured, scheduled environment. It takes the "emotional pressure" off of her since she is not trying to "bond" with anyone at school. So far, it is going well. It is weird for me to leave her there all day, but due to the disorder, Bean is doing great! She really loves it and goes all day without even asking about us. Her neurological issues continue to amaze and baffle me, this is a very odd disorder. The good news is, Bean is happy and content with her new school. On a side note: She got the cast taken off her arm today... Yeah!! Her first comment was, "Now we can go to the park!" Hmmmmm, I don't think so.

Back to School!!

August 20th was the first day of school CJ started 5th grade, "Noodle" started 2nd grade and Miss T started kindergarten. Miss T is going to a new school this year that is just for kids that are severely disabled. they have a fantastic program and we are so excited that she gets to go there! She can stay at this school until she turns 22.

"Boop's" 2nd Birthday

We celebrated "Boop's" 2nd birthday on August 14, 2008. We had dinner at the park then came home for cake and presents. I can't believe that my baby is 2! We are still waiting to finalize her adoption. We had our last post-placement visit last week so we are getting close.

Injuries...

Summer is full of: Fun in the Sun, Water Play and LOTS of ways to get hurt WARNING: This post contains photos that may not be for the "faint of heart"

"Bean" is a "toe-walker". Her dr. has ordered foot braces to try to correct the problem. This is one of the hazards of walking on your toes. She tripped while running around the play area in the waiting room at the dr's office. She fell and landed face first on the train table. Big black eye and a smushed nose - Ouch! While celebrating Boop's 2nd birthday at the park, Bean fell off the monkey bars and broke her elbow. Note: This happened the same day as the train table incident.Bean is quite pleased with her new pink cast, we bought her a princess bracelet that fits on it.

CJ jumped off a ramp while riding scooters with his friends. He landed head first on the gate latch (the big steel bar that slides down into the cement). The boys "took care" of the injury by putting CJ's head under the hose. I found out about this 5 hours after the fact. It definitely could have used a couple of stitches! The good news: He wears his helmet now! What to say about our little T-bug, she smashed her mouth and knocked out yet another tooth (this makes 3 total). She injures herself for "fun", she loves to hit her head and face on things. We are still unclear exactly how she hurt herself (I was loading kids in the car when it happened). We did a little CSI and followed the "blood pattern" in her room, we think that she was standing up, holding onto something bouncing, as usual, and lost her balance. Miss T maintains her status as a sweet, adorable, delightful, little handful of mystery.

"Illness"...

We started the summer with news from my dad in Las Vegas. His Dr. told him that he had a tumor in his left eye (which would require removal and cause blindness)and his chest (which would require very extensive surgery to remove, cracking open his sternum, spreading ribs and at least a week in the hosp. with a chest tube). They said that it was cancer that had metastasized. We quickly made arrangements for him to move in here and have surgery and treatment so that I could care for him. After consulting with the doctors here, it was decided to remove as much of the orbital tumor as possible without causing nerve damage. He had the surgery ("after" photo above) and as it turned out, it was NOT cancer! Not even one "suspicious" cell was identified. He went for a biopsy on the chest mass and... same result. We are so glad that we brought him here and that we didn't let the Dr's. in Vegas crack his chest open and remove his eye! Holy Cow.. you gotta love the Medicare Supplement HMO. My dad stayed with us from mid-May until mid-July, then he went home to resume normal life.

It's a girl!

I was adopted in June!! My Dad and I went to court in Las Vegas to finally have his name listed on my birth certificate as my father. It only took us 34 years to get it done. When we got back to Utah, my friend Judy had put this "It's a Girl" banner on my door. I thought it was so cute, we had a lot of curious neighbors asking if we had adopted another baby.

Graduation Day

May 28, 2008 - Andrew graduated from High School!! I can't believe that he is all grown up! We all went to the ceremony, Andrew played the piano for the choir. After the graduation we had a party at our house. It was a very fun and exciting day!

Hospital stay

Boop had a very nasty stomach virus called "rotavirus". She got so dehydrated so quickly that she had to be admitted to the hospital overnight for IV fluids. She was so sick! It broke my heart to watch her. The day we brought her home, I got sick with the same virus and was completely down in bed for 3 days... It was miserable! Luckily, Boop (and I) are better now.

Our Family

Cody works in Industrial Performance, Julie is a stay-at- home mom. We have 6 beautiful children; Andrew is 18, CJ is 10, "Noodle" is 7, "Miss T" is 5, "Bean" is 4and "Boop" is 2 years old. We have "built" our family in an interesting way. Andrew was 2 years old when we got married (Julie was married once before), Cody adopted him when he was 6. CJ arrived the traditional way :) after 4 years of "fertility issues". Noodle was placed for adoption with us in 2001, when he was 2 weeks old. Miss T and Bean joined our family in 2006 by adoption through the foster care system. Boop was placed with us in February 2007 when she was 5 months old. We feel so blessed to have these 6 miracles in our life!!
